Departments
Organize your dental institute into departments and specializations, assign faculty, and manage the structure that underpins student rotations, clinical operations, and academic oversight.
Department Setup
Create departments that mirror your institute's organizational structure. A typical dental institute has the following departments:
- Oral Medicine and Radiology
- Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
- Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics
- Prosthodontics and Crown & Bridge
- Periodontology
- Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics
- Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry
- Oral Pathology and Microbiology
- Public Health Dentistry
For each department, configure:
- Name and description: Official department name and a brief overview
- Department head: The faculty member responsible for the department
- Location: Which building, floor, or wing the department operates from
- Chairs / operatories: Clinical capacity available to the department
- Specializations: Sub-specialties or focus areas within the department

Specializations
Within each department, define specializations for postgraduate programs and focused clinical tracks. For example, the Department of Prosthodontics might have specializations in:
- Implant Prosthodontics
- Maxillofacial Prosthetics
- Geriatric Prosthodontics
Specializations help you organize faculty expertise, student electives, and clinical case routing. When a patient requires specialized care, Odento can route the case to the department and specialization best equipped to handle it.
Case Routing
When a patient is diagnosed with a condition that falls under a specific department's expertise, Odento can suggest routing the case to that department. This ensures patients get the right care and students get exposure to relevant cases.

Faculty Assignment
Assign faculty members to departments and specializations. A faculty member can belong to multiple departments if they teach across disciplines. For each assignment, specify:
- Role: Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor, Lecturer, or Visiting Faculty
- Department: Primary department affiliation
- Specialization: Area of expertise within the department
- Supervision capacity: How many students they can supervise per clinical session
- Working hours: When they're available for teaching and clinical supervision
Student Rotations
Schedule student rotations through departments to ensure broad clinical exposure. A rotation assigns a batch (or sub-group) to a department for a defined period. During the rotation:
- Students see patients under that department's supervision
- Procedures they perform count toward both department-specific and overall requirements
- Faculty in the department provide supervision and assessment
- The department's chair capacity is allocated to the rotating students
Rotation Calendar
The rotation calendar shows all departments and which student groups are assigned to each, by week or month. Use it to avoid scheduling conflicts and ensure every student gets exposure to every department before graduation.
Department Reports
Each department head has access to department-specific reports:
- Patient volume: Cases handled by the department per month
- Student activity: Procedures performed by students during their rotation
- Faculty workload: Supervision hours and student counts per faculty member
- Chair utilization: How effectively the department's clinical capacity is being used
