Neurax
Odento's AI engine for patient-facing conversations, clinical insights, anomaly detection, and workflow automation. Neurax handles patient communication on WhatsApp while a deterministic workflow engine automates practice operations behind the scenes.
Overview
Neurax is the intelligence layer of the Odento platform. It has two distinct components: an AI conversation engine that handles free-form patient messages on WhatsApp, and a deterministic workflow engine that automates practice operations based on events. The AI component uses Gemini for natural language understanding and generation, while the workflow engine uses rules and templates — no AI for deterministic tasks.
The doctor's interface is never conversational. Dentists interact with Odento through buttons, overlays, tables, and purpose-built clinical screens. Neurax works in the background, handling patient communication and flagging items that need the dentist's attention.
AI Usage Policy
AI (Gemini) is used only for patient conversation, insights summaries, anomaly detection, and content generation. Everything else — scheduling, billing, prescriptions, workflows, audit — uses deterministic algorithms and templates.

Patient Conversations
Neurax handles free-form patient messages on WhatsApp. Patients chat naturally — asking about symptoms, booking appointments, inquiring about treatment costs, or following up after a procedure. Neurax understands the intent, responds in natural language, and takes actions like booking appointments, sharing clinic information, or escalating to the dentist when needed.
Conversation Capabilities
- Appointment booking: Patients describe when they want to come in; Neurax finds available slots and books.
- Symptom triage: Patients describe symptoms; Neurax provides general guidance and recommends booking if appropriate.
- Cost inquiries: Answers questions about treatment pricing based on the practice's configured rates.
- Post-treatment follow-up: Checks in with patients after procedures, shares care instructions, and flags complications.
- Rescheduling and cancellation: Handles changes to existing appointments with confirmation.
- Clinic information: Answers questions about hours, location, parking, and services offered.
- Payment reminders: Sends outstanding balance reminders and payment links.
Human Escalation
When Neurax encounters a situation it cannot handle — a clinical question requiring professional judgment, a complaint, or a complex case — it escalates to the dentist or front desk staff. The escalation appears in the Odento dashboard with full conversation context so the human can pick up seamlessly.
Clinical Safety
Neurax never provides specific medical advice, diagnoses, or treatment recommendations. It offers general information and always recommends consulting the dentist for clinical decisions.

Insights
Neurax generates AI-powered insights for the dentist's dashboard. These insights read practice data and surface patterns, trends, and actionable observations. Insights are presented as natural language summaries alongside charts — not as chat messages.
Insight Types
- Revenue insights: "Revenue is down 15% this month compared to last, primarily due to fewer root canal procedures."
- Patient retention: "12 patients haven't visited in over 6 months despite being on a 3-month recall schedule."
- No-show patterns: "No-shows spike on Friday afternoons — consider overbooking by 10% for those slots."
- Treatment acceptance: "Treatment plan acceptance rate is 45% — below the 60% industry benchmark."
- Operational efficiency: "Chair 2 utilization is only 38% while Chair 1 is at 85%."
Anomaly Detection
Neurax runs background pattern analysis to detect anomalies in practice data. When something unusual is detected, it flags the dentist on the dashboard. Anomaly detection covers:
- Billing anomalies: Unexpected drop in collections, unusual refund patterns, duplicate invoices.
- Scheduling anomalies: Sudden spike in cancellations, unusual booking patterns, overbooked days.
- Patient behavior: A patient who always confirms suddenly stops responding, unusual complaint patterns.
- Clinical patterns: Unusual frequency of a specific procedure, unexpected post-operative complication rates.
- Inventory anomalies: Consumables depleting faster than expected, possible wastage or theft.
Workflow Automation
The workflow engine is a deterministic, event-driven automation system — think n8n-style automation built into Odento. It executes predefined steps when events occur. Every execution is logged, creating an automatic audit trail.
Event Triggers
appointment.created— New appointment bookedappointment.completed— Appointment marked completeappointment.cancelled— Appointment cancelledpatient.created— New patient registeredcart.abandoned— Patient left payment page without payingtreatment.completed— Treatment plan marked completepayment.received— Payment confirmed by Razorpay
Example Workflow: Post-Appointment Follow-up
Trigger: appointment.completed
Steps:
1. Wait 2 hours
2. Send WhatsApp message (template: post_care_instructions)
├── Variables: patient_name, procedure, care_tips
└── Channel: WhatsApp via Neurax
3. Wait 24 hours
4. Send WhatsApp message (template: feedback_request)
├── Variables: patient_name, dentist_name
└── Includes: 5-star rating link
5. If rating <= 3:
├── Flag on dentist dashboard
└── Send alert to front desk
6. If rating >= 4:
├── Send Google review link
└── Offer next appointment booking
7. Wait 7 days (or per procedure recall interval)
8. Send recall reminder (template: recall_reminder)
└── Includes: booking linkWorkflow Node Types
- Action nodes: Send message, create invoice, update record, call API.
- Condition nodes: Branch based on data (if/else, switch).
- Time nodes: Wait for a duration, schedule for a specific time, or use cron.
- Human input nodes: Pause and ask the dentist or patient for input, wait for a tap.
- Notification nodes: Send WhatsApp, email, or SMS via the centralized notification system.
Automatic Audit Trail
Every workflow execution is logged with timestamps, input data, output, and the user who triggered it. This creates a complete audit trail for compliance without any manual effort.
Templates and Presets
Neurax ships with a library of pre-written templates and presets so practices can get started without configuring everything from scratch:
- Message templates: Pre-written WhatsApp messages with variable placeholders (not AI-generated).
- Service-to-recall mapping: Automatic follow-up intervals per procedure type (e.g., cleaning every 6 months).
- Symptom-to-guidance mapping: General guidance for common symptoms (from a curated database, not AI).
- Workflow presets: Pre-built workflows for common scenarios (new patient welcome, post-op follow-up, payment reminder).
Configuration
Neurax is configured in Settings → Neurax. Key settings include:
- WhatsApp Business number and API credentials
- Business hours (for after-hours auto-responses)
- Escalation recipients (who gets notified when Neurax escalates)
- Enabled workflows (toggle individual workflows on/off)
- Message templates (customize wording, add variables)
- AI personality and tone (formal, friendly, concise)
- Knowledge base content (clinic-specific FAQs, services, pricing)
